Mission Statement

The purpose of Graduate Student Life is to:

  • Provide programs that help create a tangible graduate student campus community.
  • Foster graduate student conversation and collaboration across disciplines.
  • Encourage, recognize and celebrate the uniqueness of graduate students.
  • Promote existing campus services and encourage service areas to be more inclusive of graduate student needs.
  • Grow and maintain a graduate student presence in institutional decisions that affect the quality of life for graduate students.
  • Help departments share ideas about programs and support structures for graduate students.
  • Conduct regular assessments of graduate student quality of life on campus
  • Advocate for graduate student needs across campus.

Welcome to GSL: Graduate Student Life was created to promote campus community and increase cross-discipline interaction for all UMD graduate students. About the GSL Office

Graduate Student Life Handbook is your source for information about programs and services related to the graduate student experience at the University of Maryland. The Handbook includes information for both newly admitted and current graduate students at UMD.

Monthly Social Series: The series sponsors at least two graduate-only social events each month for graduate students at the University of Maryland.

coffee cups and plates touching in multicolored backgroundGraduate Lounge and Free Coffee Thursdays: The Graduate Lounge is a small lounge and resource center located in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union Center for Campus Life that serves UMD graduate students. Every Thursday while the university is open, GSL offers all graduate students free coffee, tea and cocoa, plus occasional special offerings.

Play Games For Grads Each Wednesday from 12:00-2:00pm

Need a break from your studies? Ever wanted to play a game and not had enough people to play it with? Looking to meet other graduate students in an informal setting? If so, come to Games For Grads every Wednesday (while classes are in session) from 12:00-2:00pm in the Graduate Student Lounge (room 1121, The Stamp). We provide the location, the games, and the FREE snacks. You and your fellow graduate students provide the fun! Gather, choose a game, and play, or you can bring your own game. Available game types include: board, card, cooperative, competitive, party, strategic, and more. For more information contact Sonja Dietrich at sdietric@umd.edu.

Graduate Student Life Wants Graduate Students to Keep Calm and Stress Less
Graduate Student Life is working with Wellness @ Maryland on the campus-wide Keep Calm and Stress Less campaign to provide resources, services and tips to help students reduce their stress, improve their physical and emotional well being and thrive as a GradTerp! Check out these 70 Ways to Stress Less at Maryland and a stress less blog from the The Freedom Experiment.
