Is this some sort of political correctness campaign implemented by the university?

No, this campaign is a student driven initiative which aims to:

Help staff and students understand that their words have power & can impact others' sense of belonging on campus by educating one another on the impact, origin and context of words as well as how some language connects to larger systems of institutional marginalization such as racism, sexism, homophobia...

We are not encouraging "language policing" or insinuating that the usage of a non-inclusive word or phrase equals attacking behavior, yet we recognize that at times they can be used to purposely harass or intimidate others.
