Black Student Involvement

Mission Statement

Black Student Involvement supports and creates community through our advisement of students and student organizations, who self-identify as being a part of the African Diaspora, and promotes opportunities for leadership and civic engagement. The unit advocates for the educational, social, and cultural needs of students through peer and faculty-staff mentoring.

For more information about getting involved, feel free to contact Micaylah Jones, Graduate Coordinator for Black Student Involvement & Community Advocacy, at mjones98@umd.edu.

Opportunities include:

     Unity Newsletter

     Black Monologues

     Black Student Involvement Internship Program

     Black History Month Planning Committee

     HESI 418B: Black Leadership

     And much more!

The Black Monologues are designed to give students, staff, and faculty an opportunity to share their stories through the performance of original monologues while educating the broader campus community on institutional issues and experiences affecting African-descended members of the University of Maryland community. The program will give audience members an opportunity to think critically and challenge their individual biases while dispelling stereotypes and hopefully stimulating important dialogue surrounding critical issues of identity, equity, retention, and social justice.

UNITY is a monthly e-newsletter for and by students who self-identify as being a part of the African Diaspora at the University of Maryland, College Park. UNITY aims to inform students about events and opportunities on campus, as well as in the community at large.
