What criteria will be considered for awarding a Veterans scholarship?

  • Educational and career ambitions
  • Record of personal achievement
  • Record of military service (or service as a spouse/family member); motivation for serving
  • Compelling, thoughtful and thorough essay question responses
  • Unmet financial need

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Graduate Hourly Position for Veterans STEM Assistance Program
The Adele H. Stamp Student Union--Center for Campus Life
University of Maryland College Park

 

The Graduate Program Assistant for Veterans STEM Assistance Program will work with the Veteran Student Life team to coordinate the tutoring program designed especially for U.S. military and Veteran students seeking assistance in STEM classes.

 

Responsibilities

 

·         Assist with recruitment of STEM tutors to begin the last week of August

·         Create and manage online scheduling tool to keep an organized calendar of all tutoring appointments.

·         Produce online publications that advertise openings in tutoring schedule

·         Use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to promote tutoring sessions

·         Attend all trainings for tutors conducted by Learning Assistance Service and Veteran Student Life

·         Write and compile assessment of service and satisfaction

·         Assist tutors with the creation of customized study plans for each student veteran

·         Assist Veteran Student Life with the coordination of a Lunch and Learn series of workshops to focus on general topics such as test anxiety, time management, and study skills

·         Manage online space reservations for tutoring sessions and “on time” communication of tutoring services to students

Qualifications:

Must have a bachelor’s degree and be enrolled full time in a graduate degree program at the University of Maryland College Park.  Experience in using social media for marketing a program is preferred. Knowledge of scheduling systems preferred. Previous experience as a tutor preferred. Must be detail oriented, with excellent written and oral communication skills. Other required qualifications include strong time management skills, problem solving skills, and a genuine interest in serving Veteran students.

 

Terms of Appointment:

This is an 10-month position that begins August 1, 2016, and ends May 30, 2017, with an opportunity for reappointment. This position entails 10 hours of work per week. (Please note that exact appointment dates are flexible and can be discussed upon hire.)

 

Compensation:

This position is an hourly graduate appointment. The position will work a maximum of 10 hours per week for 40 weeks. The hourly rate is $20.00 per hour.

Hourly tutor position for Veterans STEM Assistance Program

The Veteran STEM Assistance Program is designed to meet the specific academic needs of our U.S. military and veteran students. We are hiring four tutors with specializations in the STEM fields. We are looking for students who are veterans, active duty, or students interested in assisting with veterans’ readjustment to academic life.

Job Description: 

  • Hold 5 hours/week of one-on-one tutoring based off of a customized study plan
    • Complete weekly reports to document your accomplishments during office hours
  • Complete three hours of training in August from Learning Assistance Service
  • Complete a Got Your Six training in August from Veteran Student Life
  • Attend the Veterans Orientation August 26th
  • Assist with Lunch and Learn workshop series if you have available during the approved hours
  • Attend all scheduled meetings with team members and supervisors
  • Respond fully to all emails from team members and supervisors within 48 hours, as well as to calls within 24 hours
  • Each semester provide the Graduate Program Assistant with a weekly schedule of when you are available for work. Inform supervisors at least 24 hours in advance if you are not able to keep your schedule
  • Take weekly attendance for all tutoring sessions

Qualifications

·         Qualified applicants will have demonstrated capacity to productively engage with peers in mentoring or advising

·         Completion of a course in which tutoring is being done with an earned grade of at least a “B”

·         Recommendation from an instructor of each course you wish to tutor

·         Overall GPA of 3.0

·         Excellent interpersonal communication skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social background

Compensation: Tutors will work 5 hours per week throughout the Fall and Spring semesters, and receive an hourly wage of $15.00 per hour. All training and mandatory meetings will be paid and must be attended.

Student Veterans Launch Veterans Crisis Fund Campaign


The TerpVets launched a fundraising campaign for the Veterans in Transition Crisis Fund. With the Kamin Foundation's gift we were able to establish the fund, and with the impact that it already has made, student veterans are voicing their stories to increase the amount of the fund. Terp Vets Alumni Veteran Scholarship Now Accepting Donations!

The Terp Vets Alumni Scholarship was established in 2016 by three University of Maryland student veteran alumni in order to support future generations of student veterans. The fund provides scholarship support for student veterans active in Terp Vets, the University’s student veteran organization. Preference is given to student veterans who have either exhausted or are nearing the end of their GI Bill benefits. If you would like to make make a donation please click here.


Veterans in Transition Crisis Fund

Veteran Student Life is proud to announce the Veterans in Transition Crisis Fund. This fund will be used to assist any veterans facing hardships when transitioning to and attending the University of Maryland.This fund will  help cover emergencies such as housing, medical, and other unforeseen crisis that can have a drastic impact on a veteran-students ability to succeed at the University of Maryland. We are very grateful for the establishment of this fund and will be forever thankful to the Kamin Foundation.

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!

(1) Get access to the University of Maryland Veteran Center: The new Veterans Center is located in 1122 Cole Field House. Thanks to a generous donation from Board of Trustee member Gordon England, the space is exclusively available for student veterans. Come spend time with each other while on campus, get a cup of coffee, watch TV, use our computers, or study. You can get access to the Veteran Lounge by submitting your proof of service (i.e., DD214, Armed Forces Service ID card) & your University identification number (UID) to our email account vetstudentlife@umd.edu or you can call (301) 405-9605 to set up an appointment to show such identification.
