Mission Statement

The mission of America Reads*America Counts (AR*AC), a partnership between the University of Maryland and Prince George's County Public Schools, is to provide a high quality mentoring program that enriches learning opportunities for both college and elementary school students.

Volunteer Opportunity 

AR*AC Celebration Days – Maryland Reads Day, Maryland Counts Day and Partners in Print Family Day – give University of Maryland students and faculty the opportunity to spend a morning volunteering with local elementary school students. 

The dates for Celebration Days are: 

  • Maryland Reads Day – Friday, May 1 
  • Maryland Counts Day – Friday, May 8 
  • Partners in Print Family Day – Saturday, May 9

Statistics and Important Numbers

During the 2013 – 2014 school year, 338 AR*AC mentors:

  • Spent 1,225 hours in elementary schools each week 
  • Partnered with 19 Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) 
  • Helped 46.6 percent of their first and second grade mentees increase reading ability by at least three book levels
  • Helped 54 percent of their fourth grade mentees increase math scores by at least 20 percent 
  • Impacted more than 3,920 PGCPS students and parents
