This spring, the Stamp Gallery at the University of Maryland, College Park, presents Amidst, an exhibition featuring three artists in the second year of MFA candidacy in the Department of Art at the University of Maryland, College Park: Martin Gonzales, Elizabeth Katt, and Alyssa Imes.

In the artists' own words:

Our show came from a discussion of where and when we currently are.  We are in the middle of our graduate school experience. We are in the middle of a global pandemic which has changed everything in the past year. So, we decided on the word, Amidst.  We are Amidst all the peaks and valleys that come with pushing ourselves in creative directions. We are Amidst the pandemic with all of its uncertainty, challenges, and changes.  We are Amidst our angst.  We are Amidst our perseverance. We are Amidst and that can be an uncomfortable place to be.

This exhibition will include an artist talk with the artists April 22, 2021 at 6pm. There will also be an in-gallery art-based activity series for visitors to further explore topics around the artwork on view. ABOUT THE GALLERY

Located on the first floor of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union—Center for Campus Life at the University of Maryland, College Park, the Stamp Gallery is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art, especially the work of emerging and mid-career artists. The Stamp Gallery supports contemporary art that is challenging, academically engaging, and attuned to broad community and social issues. Through meaningful exhibitions and programming, the Gallery offers outside-of-the-classroom experiential learning opportunities. It functions as a laboratory where emerging artists and curators experiment and work through their ideas. The Gallery’s programming aims to emphasize the importance of process to contemporary artistic practice and to provide a forum for dialogue.

Spring 2021 hours: Mondays–Thursdays: 10 am – 7 pm, Fridays: 10 am – 5 pm, Saturdays: 11 am – 5 pm, Sundays: Closed. 

The Stamp Gallery's physical space will open on Monday, February 8, with an occupancy cap of 10 visitors at a time. If you would like a virtual tour of the gallery for your large group, we encourage you to email us at stampgallery@umd.edu. We can also provide in-person tours for small groups.

Additionally, the gallery will be reservation-only for the first hour of every day. You or your group can reserve a time to view the exhibition in 30 minute slots. Labyrinth, Garden of Reflection and Remembrance

Part of the Terps Interfaith Exchange Program

This past year has been particularly difficult for BIPOC communities. We have been feeling the effects reverberate as we grapple with systemic inequities and adapt to different contexts. In all that, we are also finding threads of movement, mobilization, and collective action.  

The Office of Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA) has worked diligently with a student committee for this year’s Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage month theme: “So Now What?”. Please help us in celebrating their work and the message behind this April’s theme. 

The Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community has, at different moments, reckoned with both structures of power/oppression and models of privilege. There are common themes this diverse community continuously comes back to (i.e. Model Minority Myth, xenophobia, anti-Blackness, etc.). While these experiences can feel new in this current moment, we can point to a number of historical moments that highlight a sense of returning. “So Now What?” is a question that prompts continued self- and community-reflection, and also offers an opportunity to understand our work within larger and historic struggles of social justice. 

We invite you to join the University celebration of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM) 2021. This is the 29th year that AAPIHM has been a nationally recognized month-long affirmation of the experiences and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Our upcoming calendar of campus events will be posted on MICA’s website later this week.

1) AAPIHM 2021 Opening: Thursday, April 1 6pm | Keynote Speaker: Join MICA and Asian American Studies in welcoming our keynote speaker to open Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Julia Rhee is the current Interim Director of the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA). Her talk will be followed by a moderated Q&A session. Open to all. Register here. 

2) AAPI Check-Ins (see dates and times below) |  MICA is bringing back AAPI Check-Ins! This year, these weekly sessions will be peer led. Have lunch or a snack, take a break from studying, pause, process with your community members, and just be.

The Latinx/a/o Spring 2021 Graduation Celebration will occur on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at 7:00 pm. Due to COVID-19, it will take place virtually. Every community owes its existence and strength to the generations before them, around the world, who contributed their hopes, dreams, and energy into making the history that led to this moment. Some were brought here against their will, some were drawn to migrate from their homes in hope of a better life, and some have lived on this land for more generations than can be counted. Truth and acknowledgment are critical in building mutual respect and connections across all barriers of heritage and difference. 

At the office of Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA), we believe it is important to create dialogue to honor those that have been historically and systemically disenfranchised. So, we acknowledge the truth that is often buried: We are on the ancestral lands of the Piscataway People, who were among the first in the Western Hemisphere. We are on indigenous land that was stolen from the Piscataway People by European colonists. We pay respects to Piscataway elders and ancestors. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration, and settlement that bring us together here today.
