The Peer Leadership Council (PLC) is a trained group of undergraduate and graduate students who deliver leadership experiences to other students through a series of workshops, institutes, and conferences. PLC participation provides an opportunity to serve the campus community as well as to develop and apply personal leadership skills. PLC works collaboratively to develop students’ capacities to be social change agents, critical thinkers, and life-long learners through challenging and engaging leadership learning opportunities.
The following are examples of activities and programs for which PLC is responsible:
The Terrapin Leadership Institute (TLI) serves to empower students to achieve their leadership potential through a multi-week leadership workshop series. TLI recognizes leadership as a skill that can be developed in all people, opening doors for individual growth and social change. The program has two tracks; 1) The Leadership Challenge & the 5 Exemplary Leadership Practices and 2) Good to Great.

Turtle Camp is a five-day leadership immersion program for incoming first-year and transfer students. Sixty students will have the opportunity to connect with other incoming students who are passionate about leadership, visit various sites in DC, and learn more about what it means to practice socially responsible leadership. A leadership community is developed within the participants of this program and significant learning about leadership takes place through the many activities, sites, and speakers.

In partnership with Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA), MOSAIC: Diversity & Leadership Retreat is a weekend retreat held each spring focused on exploring the relationship between diversity and leadership. Interactive sessions and group discussions are designed to create an environment for individuals to examine their identity and how it influences their understanding of and approach to leadership. Goals of the retreat include developing a stronger sense of self-awareness, examining how identity influences leadership, and engaging in conversations around how to use insights to shape the Maryland campus community.

Voices of Social Change program brings agents of social change to campus to share their unique stories and offer their perspectives on particular social issues to help students better understand the complexities of these issues and discover ways in which they can engage in social change.

During the 2013-2014 academic school year, the Co-Curricular Leadership Programs area will offer two internship opportunities for undergraduate students. Co-curricular leadership programs center on out-of-classroom leadership conferences, institutes, retreats, and programs focused on teaching leadership for social change. The programs recognize leadership as an ability that can be developed in all people, opening doors for individual growth and social change. These positions are designed to offer insight and experience in varied aspects of the field of co-curricular leadership development.
