For many years, a nationwide effort has taken place to educate others in the issues of hunger and homelessness. For over 10 years now, the University of Maryland has joined the nationwide cause and has partnered with many student organizations, campus groups, and community agencies to raise awareness to this critical issue.
Throughout the week, opportunities to get involved and learn more about hunger and homelessness are planned by a student planning team called TerpCorps.

It is highly difficult to measure the number of homelessness or the number of individuals experiencing hunger.
According to the National Coalition for the Homeless (www.nationalhomeless.org), 3.5 million people, 1.35 million of those individuals being children are likely to experience homelessness in a given year. That translates to around 1% of the United States population. This number varies depending on the sources.
Hunger is even more prevalent in the United States, where according to the National Food Bank (www.feedingamerica.org) 36.2 million Americans lived in food insecure households, and 12.4 million of those being children. According to the Food Bank, that number has risen in the past 3 years.
