Become a Mentor

Qualifications

Prior tutoring experience is not necessary and all majors are welcome to apply. The basic and most important qualifications are listed below.

All mentors must:

  • Be enrolled at the University of Maryland, College Park
  • Be committed to making a difference in the lives of young children
  • Be reliable and responsible
  • Be able to commit to working for the entire semester

Become a mentor

There are four ways to work as a mentor: 

  • Volunteer
  • Federal Work Study employment
  • Academic Credit
  • Intern for an academic major or program

Become a Volunteer

We welcome any and all volunteers, as long as you are able to commit to all of the minimum program requirements. These include attending training sessions and maintaining a weekly mentoring schedule for a full semester.

Earn Academic Credit

AR*AC offers the following course:

HESI 318M: Applied Contextual Leadership – Leadership and Education - This is an ONLINE only course. 

This three credit online course will focus on education policy, including discussion of public school funding, the achievement gap, the No Child Left Behind legislation and its impact on schools, standardized testing, current school reform proposals, and leadership in an educational context. You must be able to mentor two days a week to be eligible.

Earn Federal Work Study

Paid Federal Work Study positions start at $10 per hour. Find information about your financial aid package on Testudo. Select "My Awards" to check your federal work study status.

You must have a federal work study award in order to get paid for your work with AR*AC.

Be an Intern

Mentors can earn internship credit for their work with AR*AC through their academic major or department. We are open to working with any department or program on campus. Previously, students have chosen AR*AC as an internship site for the following programs:

  • Family Science 
  • College Park Scholars
  • American Studies 
  • College of Behavioral and Social Sciences
  • History 
  • Civicus
  • Spanish
