Become a Participant

1. Do your research. Think about the community you’d like to serve and the social issue you want to address. Click the drop-down options under “Trip Information” to view the AB program’s complete list of trips. Check out the AB Blog to read about the experiences of past participants.

2. Attend a Participant Meet & Greet.  These are scheduled for September each year (Sept. 14th, 6:30-8pm; Sept. 27th, 4-6 pm). Interact with and ask questions of AB staff and Experience Leaders to learn more about each of the different 2017-18 AB experiences.

 3. Complete a participant application/registration. Breaks applications will open on the first day of the Fall 2017 semester.  The Breaks application requires basic contact and health information, responses to short essay questions, and a ranking of AB experiences in which you want to participate. It is highly recommended that you take time to fill out the application completely and thoroughly!! Weekends experiences are first-come, first-serve until filled.  The brief registration form includes basic contact and personal information.

4. Get placed! Breaks Experience Leaders review applications and look for students who will be highly engaged, active in the AB experience before and after the trip, interested in learning about social issues and community assets and willing to step outside their comfort zone. Participants will be notified by email of their placement status the second week of October. If you are selected to be an alternate, you will be notified of open spots as they arise. For weekends, registrants will be placed on their top choice of teams as long as their are openings available.

After being selected as a Participant

1. Review the Participant Orientation Packet and Alternative Breaks policies.

2. Attend the AB Participant Kickoff to take place at the end of October in the Stamp.

3. Submit the completed and signed forms and paperwork

4. Deposit $75 into your personal donation page (instructions to deposit money can be found under “Donate Now”). This secures your spot on the trip and is non-refundable.

5. Attend all team meetings and service activities before and after the break. Team meetings are REQUIRED and include important education, orientation and training and allow your team to establish rapport and connections prior your immersion experience. Experience Leaders will provide your team with integral information pertaining to culture, social issues, community, safety, logistics and more.

6. Fundraise and/or pay the remainder of your trip costs online or via donations and activities. All trip payments are due two weeks prior to trip departure.
