Graduate Student Appreciation Week

Graduate Student Appreciation Week is a week-long series of events and free offerings held each spring designed to recognize the contributions of graduate students. This week allows us to offer free giveaways, food, and evening events to give a special thanks to the 10,000 plus graduate students at the University of Maryland for all of the hard work that they do!

Saturday, April 1

TRAVEL to Philadelphia

Explore Philadelphia with your fellow GradTerps and Graduate Student Government this Spring! Similar to our New York trip, this ticket provides you with transportation to and from Philadelphia. Graduate Student Government and Graduate Student Life will provide suggestions for fun things to do in the city, but what you do there is up to you! We'll be dropped off at the Independence Transit Center. At the end of the day, we'll be picked up at the Independence Transit Center at 7:15pm for our return trip to College Park. Monday, April 3

12-1pm: Queer Grad Lunch

Come hang out with fellow LGBTQ grads in the Graduate Student Lounge (Stamp 0121) as we play awesome board games like Exploding Kittens and One Night Ultimate Werewolf. Pizza will be provided!

1-2pm: Inside the Director's Studio: Figuring Out How to Survive Grad School

Join us at the Family Table in the Student Involvement Suite as Marsha Guenzler-Stevens and Friends talk about 'getting to the other side.'  Light snacks will be available.

2-4pm: Plant-Your-Own Succulent

Join us in the Graduate Student Lounge (Stamp 0121) for a plant-potting party! We'll have everything you need including the succulents, soil, river rocks, and paintable pots you can personalize to add some extra pizzazz. Supplies are limited so get here early!

4:30-6pm: Graduate Alumni Communi-TEA

Come meet successful  alumni who earned their PhD or Master’s degree at Maryland. Hear how they navigated the journey from graduate school to their chosen careers in a variety of industries. Current students will leave with a better understanding of how careers are built and how jobs are really found. Reception will take place in the Grand Ballroom Lounge. Light refreshments will be served. Space is limited and attendees must pre-register for this event at


Tuesday, April 4

12-2pm: GLAO Salary Negotiation Luncheon

The Graduate Student Legal Aid Office (GLAO) is proud to offer this workshop on salary negotiations. 

1-4pm: Video Gaming Tournament

Join us in the TerpZone to show off your gaming skills! Players will compete in Mario Kart and/or Pokemon battles to see which grad is the very best, like no grad ever was! Registration is required. Sign up here!

4-6pm: LGBTQ Mix & Mingle

Stop by the Grad Student Life lounge anytime between 4pm and 6pm and grab some pizza, meet with other LGBTQ and allied graduate students, and learn more about resources on campus.*Sponsored by Graduate School Office of Graduate Diversity and Inclusion and Grad Student Life. Stop by the Stamp Atrium on your way to class for bagels, muffins, and other tasty treats.

Graduate Research Appreciation Day (GRAD)

Graduate Research Appreciation Day (GRAD) provides an on-campus conference-style venue in which graduate students from all academic backgrounds can share their research or work, obtain valuable faculty and peer feedback, and hone their communication skills within the comfort of their own campus environment. GRAD fosters healthy competition among students by recognizing and awarding the best presentations from subject-themed oral, poster, and elevator-speech presentation sessions, among others. Thursday, April 6

9-10:30am: Breakfast with the Dean

Join Graduate Student Life in the Graduate Student Lounge for breakfast, and stick around for a chat with Dean Franke from the Graduate School.

1-3pm: Paint & Sip in the ALC

Take a break to clear your mind with a guided painting class at the Art & Learning Center. Supplies will be provided but are limited. No previous experience required.

3-5pm: The Price is Right

Come on down to the Hoff Theater in the Stamp for America's favorite game show! Guess the prices of various items and win tons of prizes!


Friday, April 7

12-1pm: Breathe, Expand Your Peace Within

Breathe, Expand Your Peace Within is taking place on Fri., April 7 from noon to 1 pm (as well as the 14th and 21st) at the Labyrinth in the Garden of Reflection and Remembrance.  There is a meditation session led by Edie Anderson of the University Health Center, followed by a free lunch.  Email to sign up.

1-3pm: Graduate Student Government Assembly

GSG invites you to our April Assembly - Find out what GSG is up to and what is happening around campus. A delicious lunch from Lebanese Taverna will be provided. Nyumburu Cultural Center, Multipurpose Room.

4-7pm: Grad Pub

Graduate Student Life, Graduate Student Government, and The Clarice invite all graduate students to a special Graduate Student Appreciation Week Grad Pub!  Enjoy discounted drinks at the cash bar, and feel free to bring a friend. Be sure to have your graduate student ID and proof of age.


Saturday, April 8:

Cherry Blossom Festival Lunch Cruise

GradTerps will travel on their own to Pier 4, Water Street SW, Washington DC near the Waterfront Metro Stop to arrive by 11:00am. Once there, they’ll check in with Jamie to receive their tickets. The lunch cruise lasts about 2 hours and is buffet style. GradTerps will also be treated to a live DJ and dance floor. Please e-mail with any dietary restrictions. Soft drinks are included in the ticket price, but please bring cash to take advantage of the cash bar. Get your tickets here!


Sunday, April 9:

#GradsGo to the Board & Brew

Join Graduate Student Government and Graduate Student Life at this #GradsGo event during Graduate Student Appreciation Week. Meet us at the Board and Brew at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 9th. This will be an afternoon of board games, fun, and food at our local board game cafe. Get your tickets here!


In addition, GSL will be offering FREE COFFEE EVERY DAY in the lounge from 8:30am-4pm
