Programs and Events for Grads

Graduate school can at times be a lonely and isolating experience. In order to facilitate interaction beyond the department level, Graduate Student Life sponsors programs that allow graduate students to meet and socialize across disciplines. We believe that for their overall health and well-being graduate students need to balance academic responsibilities with social and entertainment activities.

    Free Coffee Thursdays
Every Thursday during the Fall and Spring semester, come to the Graduate Student Lounge from 9am to 4pm to enjoy a free cup of coffee, tea or cocoa and interact with fellow graduate students, GSL staff and Graduate Student Government members.

    Monthly Social Series
Each month, Graduate Student Life runs a low-cost trip to an event in the D.C./College Park area. Events include tours and musicals, sporting events and hiking trips and are usually offered to students free or at a reduced cost.

    Graduate Family Programming
Each semester, Graduate Student Life sponsors programs geared toward graduate student parents and their children. Past events include a summer pool party, a Halloween pumpkin painting party, a campus farm event and a graduate parents forum.

    Graduate Student Study Breaks
Scheduled at the end of each semester, the study breaks are designed to encourage graduate students to take time off from the hectic demands of academic work and other obligations and enjoy free food, snacks, giveaways, massages, stress consultations and a quiet place to study.

    Graduate Student Appreciation Week
Graduate Student Appreciation Week is a week-long series of events and free offerings held each spring designed to recognize the contributions of graduate students. This week allows us to offer free giveaways, meals, massages and evening events to give a special thanks to the 10,000 plus graduate students at the University of Maryland for all of the hard work that they do!

    Graduate Student Welcome Weeks
The transition to Graduate School can be difficult and overwhelming.  Graduate Student Life is committed helping new Grads get adjusted, and that's why we're offering, "Graduate Student Welcome Weeks", three weeks of programming designed to spread awareness about the various on and off-campus services the University has to offer.

    Graduate Student Kickoff
Prepare yourselves for a FREE, fun-filled welcome event for both new and returning Grad Students!!  Hosted by Graduate Student Life, Kickoff will feature a wide array of activities held throughout the Stamp Student Union, including FREE FOOD AND DRINKS, speed-friending, dance lessons, craft activities, TerpZone specials, and information on UMD resources.

    Graduate Professional Development Award
The Graduate Student Professional Development Award is sponsored by Graduate Student Life to support students hoping to travel to academic conferences and workshops. The award was established in 2014 from revenue generated during the annual Graduate Student Housing Raffle. The pilot program was offered during the Spring of the 2015-16 academic year. Each of the 10 recipients received a $200 award for their cost of attendance. In particular, students who showed leadership in their community as well as a clear dedication to improving their field of research and practice were selected.  Check back in early 2017 for our next round of applications!

    Terp Traditions- Become a Tradition!
Tweet, submit, or post a picture of you (and your friends!) doing something you believe should be a GradTerp Tradition. It might be tailgating for a Terp Football Game, studying in the McKeldin Graduate Lounge, or anything else you think every GradTerp should do. Each submission will grant you one entry into a raffle for one of several Target gift cards. Enter by tweeting with the hashtags #GradTerps and #TerpTraditions, by submitting to the Graduate Student Life Facebook page, or e-mailing us at gradstudentlife@umd.edu.
