Michael Weinberger is the Graduate Assistant Coordinator for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Student Involvement & Advocacy. Michael is a first-year graduate student, studying urban planning in the area of community development. He received his undergraduate degree from the American University in Washington, D.C., with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and American Studies. Michael has spent the past year working at the Equal Rights Center in Washington, D.C dealing with discrimination cases in the area of housing and employment. He also worked on an LGBT Jewish education conference called NUJLS (National Union of Jewish LGBTQQI student) to promote advocacy and activism within the LGBT Jewish community.
Michael advises the LGBT student organization, the Pride Alliance, along with the five social/support constituent groups Safe Space (SS), True Colours of Maryland (TCOM), Bisexuals at Maryland (BAM), TransU, and Woman2Woman (W2W). Michael also assists in planning an coordinating the programs that occur in Community meetings which draw a broader range of members of the Pride Alliance in addition to those students who are active with the constituent groups. The LGBT community at University of Maryland is both diverse and accessible, and in his position, Michael wishes to make sure that every student at UMD has the opportunity to connect with these distinct communities and find their own experience.
Michael loves studying cities and walking their mystifying streets, playing Nintendo Wii, cooking, going to the cinema, and spending time with friends and family.
