Dear Members of the Adele H. Stamp Student Union – Center for Campus Life Community:

One of the prestigious awards given to students at the University of Maryland is Adele H. Stamp Memorial Award. The recipient of this award, which is open to all students on the College Park campus, will receive a plaque and a cash prize of $250.00. In addition, the name of the recipient is inscribed on the permanent plaque displayed on the first floor of the Stamp.

If you wish to nominate yourself, please complete the attached form. If you wish to nominate someone else, please have him/her complete the form. Additional forms are available in Room 3100, Stamp. Completed forms are due by noon on March 6, 2014.

Criteria for selection will include the following:

  1. Demonstrated leadership skills.
  2. High academic achievement (minimum of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.5 for graduates).
  3. Active involvement in the life of the campus community.
  4. Affiliation with the Union through membership in a student organization that is either housed in the Union or that uses the Union facilities for meetings or other sponsored events or through part-time employment in one of the units in the Union.

Adele H. Stamp was a special person in the history of the University of Maryland. She served as Dean of Women at College Park from 1922 to 1960 during which time she made numerous contributions to the life of the campus community. Her dedication to excellence in the education of women, promotion of campus traditions, encouragement of participation in student organizations, and service to the community resulted in an impressive list of personal honors being bestowed upon her.

To honor Adele H. Stamp and at the same time to honor current students who have demonstrated a similar commitment to excellence in the campus community, the Stamp Advisory Board created the Adele H. Stamp Memorial Award in 1987 to be given to the undergraduate or graduate student whose individual leadership qualities and achievements best embody the spirit of this important former campus leader. The recipient is recognized at the Annual Awards Banquet in the spring along with other major campus leadership awards. The cash prize of $250.00 is awarded in coordination with the Financial Aid program on campus and may impact the mix of aid in the individual recipient’s aid package.

Student leadership, which is so apparent within the Stamp in a variety of ways, should not go unrecognized. I urge you to consider appropriate nominations from your organizations or department.

Thank you for your assistance in identifying appropriate nominees for this year’s award.
